Getting around root with the Mysql server. I was able to connect for a while then after I have been prompted with error.

I down loaded the Server and the Mysql workbench and I have not been able to reset, disable or change the root password. I don't remember the root password and I can not start the server with out it. I would like to have some one explain how to reset the root password i tried ( passwd root) in the terminal, although I do not have the old password!
