good resource to understand how and where logs get created

I need to integrate a given logging framework into my spring application. But before that I want to understand what are the components where logs can potentially get created.

e.g. I already know of application and access logs. Where does Tomcat comes into picture and what kinds of problems it will generate logs. Are there any other components which can generate logs other than my Spring application and tomcat?
