Google Maps Integration - not url encoding the marker parameter works too?

In the "Adding Static Maps" lesson, we are told to replace the spaces in an address with the + sign when entering the marker parameter but leaving the address as is with the spaces works fine too. What is happening in this case? Is Google essentially just doing a search for each keyword separated by a space?
