Google Search on your site

More and more I see sites as Smashing Magazine use Google Search form embed on their sites to make the search functionality instead of the default with Wordpress or others.

What is the mayor advantage of this tool in comparison with the default?

Thanks ;)

Wordpress default search is okay, but can sometimes get a bit slow and bogged down. In my experience, it also sometimes has trouble with keywords. Additionally, I think the Wordpress default might organize the results by date instead of by relevance to your search - probably because it was originally created as a blogging platform. Many of these issues are compounded on larger sites with lots of pages, such as Smashing Magazine.

Google on the other hand is one of the most powerful search engines out there. It's fast, accurate, and the embedded tools have a lot of flexibility and options to customize. Because it's Google, it also scales much better with big websites.
