Gradle not working

When I create the fun facts project Android Studio starts to do it's thing with gradle, but I always get the same error message even in admin mode:

Error:Gradle build daemon disappeared unexpectedly (it may have been stopped, killed or may have crashed)

I've tried a few fixes already found online: invalidating/restarting Android Studio as well as deleting the .gradle folder in the user home folder. Also changed gradle to work offline. I still get that same error message. Anyone have another fix?
