Grid/Table System for designing without Bootstrap

Can anyone recommend good resources for understanding HTML layout/design without relying on the grid/column/rows of bootstrap? I started to learn HTML with bootstrap right away and want to make sure my fundamentals are solid also.

Check out the course on CSS Layouts by Guil. It specifically shows you how to create your own grid system. Hopefully it helps you get a deeper understanding of how and why it works.
