"Hackaton" Events, need tips and advice!

Hi guys

I am so CURIOUS and I want to join so called Hackaton or other similar events .. BUT! I dont know which one is my strong side; JAVA or webb development I am sort of lost don't know where to start

I dont know weather im good in JAVA. I maybe studied "too fast" without understanding. I would love to do techDegree JAVA but that's very stress for me because of time and budget problem. Can someone give me advice? Where I shall start? How do I know when I'm ready "to face it"?
