this seems to work

  public int getRemainingCharacterCount() {
      return MAX_CHARS - this.text.length();  
  }

or you could declare the int and then return it:

   public int getRemainingCharacterCount() {
       int toReturn = MAX_CHARS - text.length();
       return toReturn;
   }
