whenever i decide to use the jquery method of picking all of the unordered list li elements that have the class of nav but when i write $("ul li .nav") it does not work. is there another solution to this problem?

What you're saying is all .nav classes inside a list item, inside a unordered list; opposed to list items with a class of .nav, inside a ul.

element which has the class of "nav"
