How can i make this the right way? image

Hi,

<a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>">
                                 <img src="<?php the_post_thumbnail( 'medium') ?>" class="image-thumbnail"/>
                              </a>

How can i make this so it closes? atm it displays me the class="image etc... and if i delete that it will display me > anyways. Whats a way to overcome this?

I did this 

<div class="image-thumbnail"><?php the_post_thumbnail( 'medium') ?></div>

Is it ok?
