You have the right idea, but you've added the field into the getColor() method rather than adding it as a private field of the class. Try adding the barCount below the Private String color field, instead.

  public static final int MAX_BARS = 8;
  private String color;
  private int barCount; //note the field here

  public GoKart(String color) {
    this.color = color;
  }

  public String getColor() {
    return color;
  }
}
