How do I get my application to recognize contacts who have the same application ?

I was wondering how do I get my application to recognize the people in my contact list who have the same app? (ex. Viber, whatsapp,..)

Do I need to get the users to login to the app or is there another way to do this? I want to know how to do this using iOS and Android.
