How do I go about tabbing through a <select> drop down list?

I am trying to go through tabbing through a <select><option> drop down list. I know that because when it reads a select that it only reads it as one thing. However I am having trouble which direction to go. I figure it will be JavaScript but I am not getting it to work. Anyone can point me in the right direction?

Are you tabbing through it using JS? Normally with select boxes you use the arrow keys after it is in focus to navigate the options in it, pressing enter to select that option.
