How do I know I should add something to parent?

Hi, maybe I missed something in the previous course,I just can't figure out why sometimes you need to add something to parent, and sometimes you don't. How do I know that I should add something to parent? Thanks!

Could you elaborate a little more on this?

So as in parent you mean a layout or just any view item?

I am thinking you are talking about the parent attribute in the styles.xml file. That lets the project know that you want your style should inherit properties. I believe this an optional attribute.
