How do I remove the title bar in an android app?

When I create a app, the name of the app is displayed on the top(title bar). How do I remove it?

Using this in the onCreate method of the activity:

ActionBar actionBar = getActionBar();
          actionBar.setDisplayShowTitleEnabled(false);//hide title
          actionBar.setDisplayShowHomeEnabled(false);//hide icon

Thank you...it did remove the title and the icon but there's a space between the app layout and the top. Can you help me with this as to how can i make my app full screen?
