How do I stop the workspace from overwriting when I am writing in the console?

I have tried pressing insert(not sure exactly where it is on keyboard) but that doesn't work. When i want to edit a line because i made a tiny mistake it is annoying having to rewrite everything.

Also on a side note is there a way I can look exactly at what each key on my keyboard does? I know how to switch between different keyboard layouts.
