how do i use the contains method?

I am doing java basics mad libs prototype. The teacher happened to mention a contains method on string to strike out banned words. i dont knoe how to use it. can someone help me?

a simple example:

    String x = "this is a string containing a substring here";
    if(x.contains("substring")){
    } else {
    }

the contains method invoked on a string returns true or false, so could be used in an if statement or possibly in a while statement. But the above shows the syntax.
