How do we make sure that we use the correct CSS layout technique?

I know display modes (inline, block and inline-block), float method and positioning schemes but I am not sure about where to use the correct technique to lay out a page. For example, I can create a menubar with all these techniques and organize every single element with both float method and positioning schemes. So, how do I know that I am using the correct method or is it just ok to use whatever works well? Thanks in advance

It is a matter of preference, I usually use inline instead of inline-block. A good way to learn more is to visit Chris Coyier at https://css-tricks.com
