How do you quote code in a forum post?

Hey i know this might be pretty basic, but for some reason i cant figure out how the forum decides to post some things in the code box and others as normal text. If someone could point out where this is explained or explain it for me that would be greatly apreciated.

This post tells you all about code formatting, and much more.

While William's link above does cover it, I found Dave McFarland's entry easier to digest since it's specific to posting code here on the forum. There's also the Markdown Cheatsheet link posted near most of the comment boxes, if you forget.
