how does setting the sessionId on the request work?

how does setting the sessionId on the request work as I thought the request object would be gone from memory by the end of the script?

This question wasn't linked to a specific video, but I'm guessing it's from the user authentication course. In that case the sessionId would be stored as a cookie by the browser to be sent with future requests.
