How does the system knows which layout it should use ?

We have 2 folders layout and layout-large and the configuration for the margin is different in them but how does the system knows which one to use for instance when we run this app on tablet how it figured out to use layout-large instead of normal layout

The compiler checks the resolution and orientation of the device to decide what file and drawables to use.
