How is the Background Shape added to the Text?

At around the 4:00 mark in this video, Mat shows us how to change a shape that has already been added to text.

How was the first shape added to the text initially?

That is done within the appearance panel. You have to add a new fill, then convert that fill layer to a shape. It the Appearance panel, at the bottom, you will find the fx dropdown containing the 'convert to shape option.

Hey guys I can't seem to figure this out. Im adding text then adding then convert to shape. I pick a fill color and its on top of the text? I have I moved the fill or shape to the bottom and still nothing. I then picked the fill and then convert to shape and nothing what am I missing here? Thanks

I figured it out

write your text > grab selection tool > grab the text your wrote add new fill> pick the color you want the background to be. > click the fill you just added > now add the convert to shape effect to that fill. > drag the fill under character so it's behind the text.

If you want to change the rectangle click the dropdown triangle beside the fill and click on rectangle. That is a full explanation hope it helps someone out :)
