How to access characters in a string by index?

For example, I have a list of continents and I only want to print those starting with A.

continents.py 
continents = [
    'Asia',
    'South America',
    'North America',
    'Africa',
    'Europe',
    'Antarctica',
    'Australia',
]
for continent in continents:
    print("* " + continent)

You can treat a string like an array and use bracket notation: mystring[index] where index is between 0 and length of the string -1. For example continent[0] would return the first character in continent.
