How to add the overflow button to the action bar?

I am testing the app on my phone and the overflow menu button does not show up in the action bar. However, I find the logout feature when I click on the "menu" button on my phone. How do I change this so that the menu shows in the action bar? I am using a Galaxy S4 for reference.
