I would like to learn how to build a site similar to totsy.com, or appsumo.com. My wife and I have an idea and it would require a person to login, just like these sites, in order to see what is being offered. I'd imagine that either php or ruby could accomplish this. I'm more familiar with php than ruby as I use wordpress to build sites with custom themes.
My thinking is that when a customer first comes to the site, that a cookie, or lack of, would load a particular page. If they are new to the site they get the sign up page, else they get the main page.
So if it were in php, could a combination of wordpress, ecommerce, and some custom scripting accomplish this?
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

5,239 PointsIf you are using wordpress, you could make private pages and assign users to view those pages only if they are logged in.
You can also make a separate template file and handle sessions or cookies separately for a page or category of pages in wordpress, as a potential starting point?
