How to change scenes in JavaFX

How do you get a handle on the stage created on the overridden Start function in Main.java? I want to be able to change scenes from within the controller (on button click events for example) and I don't see how.

If I try storing the primaryStage argument from Start as a variable, it always causes null exceptions.
