You don't need the brackets in the style. Simply put "h1".

<style>

  h1 {
      color: green;     
  }

</style>

The reason is that the brackets (<>) are used to identify HTML elements. All of your code between the two style elements:

<style>
   // your CSS code
</style>

is not HTML, but CSS, which does not need brackets (<>) to identify elements.
