How to create the kind of overlap shown in this example

This seems to be quite common now, but I do like the effect and I think this website designed by Point Five Design puts it to good use in contextualizing their articles with an image floating in the background.

Are there any good tutorials for this and what is this kind of scrolling called? I know it has something to do with the positioning but had a hard time finding a tutorial online. Thank you!
