How to edit a pre-existing Wordpress site in local host? Tutorial?

Is there a tutorial on treehouse how to take a pre-existing website from WordPress edit it locally? If not does anyone know of a video somewhere which shows this.

I have tried downloading the site via FTP running it in xampp but get errors or just code showing so take it this is the incorrect way.

Many thanks.
