Mostly by answering questions here on the forum.

that's pretty much it if your active on the forum you can earn a lot of points for having the best answer 12+. Also by completing any new courses that treehouse releases.

Coming from a guy who's higher up in points, mostly just by taking courses. I haven't been able to take many courses recently, but that's really the way to earn points.

One of the mods has about 1,500 points from modding on the forums, but the rest of his ~30,000pts comes from taking courses. Additionally, he has points from old courses that have been retired (as do I).

Just work hard at it and, eventually, you'll work your way up. Also, remember that points and badges aren't just a fun little thing; they're a tool for potential employers to measure you by and they're a way of motivating you to keep at it.

Work hard at the courses, but don't overdo it and get burned out. You don't want to be burned out from code.

It's definitely from taking courses. Analyzing Ryan Duchene profile I see:

I assume the difference in totals is due to course no longer available

There have been a few courses retired since I took them, including CSS Foundations, the first business course, the old set of Smells Like Bakin' courses, and the old introductory courses to iOS and Android. Other than that, all of those courses are still live.

Update: now that I've earned over 1100 best answers for 13,200+ points plus the upvotes that come with the best answers for another 2-3k points, the forum can be a huge source of points!

I love these forums.

On tech subject questions there is a up/down vote to the upper right of each answer. It shows the current vote total, initially zero, and a little triangle for up and down. Click it to vote.
