How to get returned JSON data from a HttpPost?

I am writing a log in screen for an application that is using a simple back end made up of a few simple PHP scripts and a SQL database running on a XAMMP server. Using the android lesson for getting blog post data I tried a similar method to check I fully understand how to retrieve JSON data. However now I am trying to send the username and password to be used as parameters in PHP script for the database query. Any help would be fantastic as I'm not even 100% HttpPost is the right way to go about it.
