How to get started with report-writing in web applications?

I've recently begun working with online applications that have a need to create and export reporting in either PDF or spreadsheet format. Most of the applications I have used in my field don't do this properly and I have been interested in creating my own or learning how to.

I would like to see if I could, through Treehouse, learn how to do this.

Any recommendations on where to start? What programming language to use? Maybe Treehouse isn't the best place to start?
