How to make the homepage the URL itself without the /index

I've been able to remove the .html from all of my pages with an .htaccess file , but to access my homepage, I have to have "/index" at the end of the URL. Nick seems to have done this without changing anything, but I have no idea about how to do this for my own website. I'm using namecheap to host instead of dreamhost.
