How to set date properties

Hello all, I am trying to set a date from a UIDatePicker. I'm having a problem in that when I use an NSDateComponents to first get all of the components needed to calculate the date and then use those components to set the date in the date object it keeps gibing me an error saying "no setter method for assigning to property", what can I do to solve this problem?

NSCalendar *calendar = [[NSCalendar alloc] initWithCalendarIdentifier:NSGregorianCalendar];
    self.upcomingEvent.dateOfEvent = [calendar components:NSYearCalendarUnit|NSMonthCalendarUnit|NSDayCalendarUnit|NSHourCalendarUnit|NSMinuteCalendarUnit|NSSecondCalendarUnit fromDate:self.editUpcomingEventDatePicker.date];

self.upcomingEvent.dateOfEvent.date = [calendar dateFromComponents:self.upcomingEvent.dateOfEvent];
