HTML 5 meta tag

I noticed that there are many ways of adding the meta tag here in Treehouse. some videos use only: meta charset = utf-8 and in other videos they use longer lines than just this one. So, which one should I use?

If you're using HTML5

<!DOCTYPE html>

It doesn't really matter. Use the shorter one, it's easier.

Both work but with HTML5 the shorter one is acceptable and recommend. I remember in college they forced us to use the long version...painful but true. For one test I had to remember it and actually write it out.
