HTML and CSS , more of css FLOATS

Hi, so i was just thinking about floats in CSS, i didnt used them for quite a long time as i remembered them now . Can somebody tell me and describe a good way and where to put them in the website? from what i remember i used clear both and i had a website that had the background going down with other stuff as it was expanding down and down all the columns were going down with it too.
