In this video, Nick uses the following attribute...

<html lang="en">

Wouldn't the meta tag character set be sufficient? What is the purpose/benefits of including the lang attribute in the html tag?

It's an optional attribute but it helps search engines define the language for your page when it gets listed. It's an SEO benefit. :-)
