HTML vs HTML5

What is the difference between html and html5?

There were syntaxes added like

<section>
<article>
<aside>

HTML5 is just essentially an updated and extended version of HTML so it is hard to really put them head to head like that as HTML5 would obviously come out on top seeing as it has a lot of new and cool features that previous versions didn't.
