General Discussion

I am interested in working as a full time web developer.

I am intrigued by the thought of having an income form coding. I was wondering if anyone is running a successful web development company and would be interested adding another member to the team. I am fairly new to the web development, design, and programming world. Yet am confident in my ability to provide value and would really appreciate a chance at gaining the experience from a paid position, even if that may be commisions.

I have coded HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I have experience with WordPress quite well too.

I don't have money for schooling or marketing, and freelance sites are not holding up to what I thought they would be. It would mean a lot if someone could point me in the right direction.

My tips are as follows:

  • Get a linkedin account, incredibly valuable and you can apply for jobs through it and endorsements.
  • Host your own content on a website as a portfolio, as most good companies want to see what you can do rather than simply looking at a CV (Though a good CV will help.)
  • Create a codepen.io account and be creative with it, who knows maybe someone might like what you do and approach you.
  • Use Treehouse only as a supplement learning environment, as good as it is for learning you need to get into using the various technologies that are out there, in real life environments.
  • Be positive, but don't get cocky; so many developers are over-confident and it gets quite annoying (and old real fast).

Hopefully this helps, good luck with everything!

HI,

Just wonder, what do you mean some developers are cocky? Do you mean the experienced ones that can do all the good stuff? and feel like thier God of Programming or something ? xd

There are guys who haven't been knocked down a peg by more experienced programmers, so they ooze overconfidence, and it can become incredibly annoying.

Key Note: There will always be a better programmer then you, better to try and learn from them until you become as good as or better than them.
