Python Python Basics (2015) Number Game App Squared

I cannot get the non-ints to work properly

For some reason, I cannot get the non-ints (ex. 'tim') to work properly, & I'm unsure as to why. I've been working on this problem for a few days now (here and in idle on my PC), and the current code I have works in idle, but not here. That said, I believe that I have something wrong with my syntax.

Thanks, Harrison

squared.py
# EXAMPLES
# squared(5) would return 25
# squared("2") would return 4
# squared("tim") would return "timtimtim"
def squared(num):
    try:
        if num == int:
            square = num ** 2
            return square
    except ValueError:
        for i in range(len(num)):
            square = (num, end ="")
            return square
