I can't get the ID to stay uppercase while also adding more values to the variables.

Is there a way to add with the variables so that they are also uppercase?

app.js
var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith";
var userName = id.toUpperCase();
userName = userName +'#'+ lastname.toUpperCase();
index.html

  <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
  <title>JavaScript Basics</title>
</head>
<body>
<script src="app.js"></script>
</body>
</html>
