Business How to Market Your Business Search Engine Optimization Defining SEO

I didn't learn how to do SEO.

I viewed your series on SEO and it did not teach me how to do SEO. I would really like to learn SEO, any ideas how I can?

Plenty of helpful replies here so far, but I also wanted to mention we're launching our new SEO Basics course on March 31, including tips on how to use content, code, and various tools to improve your SEO. Hope that helps!

It's kind of a lot of stuff to cover in one short video, but fortunately there are some good articles out there, and once you understand what SEO is, things start to make more sense.

SEO is basically a set of practices and things to include in your website so that search engines like Google can discover what type of content your website has and present it to users (searchers) whenever it's relevant to them.

For example, one of the most basic SEO practices is making your image names contain dashes instead of spaces or underscores. They should also be descriptive, like "team-treehouse-web-development-demo.jpg", as opposed to "df983j_8913.jpg"

Other examples of SEO are using "alt" tags in images (and using them well), setting up a blog properly, having a good link-scheme on your website, and so on.

Here are two articles I found helpful, which discuss up-to-date practices.

Forbes: Three Pillars of SEO in 2014

Forbes: The 9 On-Page SEO Elements You Need In 2014

I am aware of all of that. I am wondering how to do SEO as far as link building and whatever is done outside of your own website. Besides blogging and the other obvious things.

The term of that is off-page SEO vs on-page SEO.

Thank James. Great article I am going to read it now.
