I do not understand this. Everything is closed, and the links are in the proper step.

Everything looks to be in order. Can anyone see a slipup?

I guess the error is because of first anchor element which was closed by you after h2.

    <header>
      <a href="index.html">
          <h1>Nick Pettit</h1>
          <h2>Designer</h2>
      </a>

            <li><a href="contact.html">Contact</a></li>
        </ul>
     </nav>
   </header>

You must've started the challenge right after the first anchor tag but it had to be done after the closing. Your code is right just needs to be placed correctly in the right place.

<header>
  <a href="index.html">
      <h1>Nick Pettit</h1>
      <h2>Designer</h2>
  </a>
//Start challenge here
       <nav>
          <ul>
            <li><a href="index.html">Portfolio</a></li>
            <li><a href="about.html">About</a></li>
            <li><a href="contact.html">Contact</a></li>
        </ul>
     </nav>
   </header>
