I don't really understand what the static keyword does in Java,

The 'static' keyword in Java can be really quite confusing at first and I remember having to ask for help with it myself.
A 'static' variable or method in Java means that the method belongs to the class rather than the object. This means that each of the objects have the same versions of whatever methods are static.
