echo $name;

you need to add a space before the variable and also don't forget the semi-colon!

EDIT: I have just tried the test and it worked..

<?php

$name = "Mike";

echo $name;

?>

p.s. don't open and close Php tags when is not needed, once opened you can give any instructions you want..
