General Discussion

I just thought I would pop in and say "hello"

I'm fairly new to Treehouse and haven't used the forums at all yet, but I think it could be helpful to get to know some of my fellow students.

Say 'hi' and let's get to know each other! :)

Hi Lauren! Nice to meet you. Welcome to the Treehouse! I see you are taking the HTML and CSS. What are your goals?

Nice to meet you, too. Please, call me 'Ren'.

My long-term goal is a career change, or rather, moving from a job to a career. Currently I operate machinery in a factory, and while I actually enjoy it in ways, it isn't the most fulfilling thing to do day after day. I started playing around with web development out of curiosity and found it so rewarding that I'd like to do it for a living.

How about you? You have about a million points, with some in just about everything, I'm rather impressed!

Hi Ren, I currently have a job working WordPress, which is written in PHP, but the Ruby language really interests me, so I decided I wanted to learn it! :)

There are plenty of people who have many more points than I do. I personally feel that it isn't about racking up points, but more about the learning experience and actually "getting" it.

Good luck to you, and keep in touch! :)

Hi Lauren Jones, welcome.

Hope you're enjoying Treehouse, pretty amazing and friendly community here :)

Hi Ren,

Welcome. Hope you are enjoying Treehouse :)

Nice to meet you both, Lee and Melissa.

So far I enjoy it a lot. I have to admit, something about the first video I watched put me off a bit and at first I didn't plan on sticking with it, but I came to find the lessons fun. My only small complaint is that I tend to learn better through text, or a combination of text and some other media, so I really wish there were lecture notes.

I plan on creating my own and compiling resource lists with further information to help me absorb everything and really master the skills as much as possible. Hopefully it pays off later!

What are you two working toward? How do you make the most of Treehouse, or reinforce the lessons?

Hi Ren :)

I'm currently a graphic designer and am working towards improving my web design skills so I can design web sites on the side. I kind of create my own notes too sometimes to refer back to later or sometimes I'll just download their project files and pause the video repeatedly so I can work along with them and play with things. Then, I figure I can always refer back to the code in the project files later.

The resource list is a great idea, they list some great resources.

Hey Lauren Jones. Do the notes down the page from the video not help? Think it's the transcript??? Get yourself on LinkedIn and link the account to Treehouse, same with Facebook and anything else. Get the networking started.

Have fun!

I find the transcripts awkwardly formatted to use as notes most of the time, unfortunately.

Is it reasonable to have a LinkedIn when I'm not a professional yet? I'm not sure what I'd put on it currently, and I'd hate for it to reflect badly later.
