I need advice as to where to start here...

Hello. I have been into graphic and web design since 2006 with making small graphics for Myspace layouts and eventually styling my personal site's web domains. Back then it just seemed so easy to start and get into this field. I have left this talent that I picked up alone for a while because I got discouraged with trying to make this a business and having it not do well. Now that I have resources to help me find out the things that I need, I will say that I am more lost now than I am before. Coding Wordpress seems more complicated than it should and I feel like everything has changed since I last was into anything concerning web design or graphic design.

I am interested in bringing my skills up to date but I just feel very overwhelmed but I am still having a hard time trying to find things, tutorials to what I would imagine are simple coding techniques especially for Wordpress. I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on what would be an area to focus on in Tree House, other than Wordpress (because I feel like it is too advanced for me to try to manipulate now) CSS, HTML or PHP. I am just looking for some advice on how to start back up with web and graphic design.

There is a wordpress development course here. I have not personally done it.

I started and would recommend starting with Web Design track. This will get you up to speed with HTML and CSS.

Fro there, you will want to go to Front End Web Development or Full Stack JavaScript.

That is just my suggestion. It depends what you would ultimately like to do.

I would agree with Erik Nuber here, considering what you told us that you want to do.

To be able to do what you want(If I understood you correctly, web sites and stuff like that?) - you need to know html, css and JavaScript. Using the html you will be able to build the structure of your web sites, the css will help you style the web sites and make things look just like you want it, and then the JavaScript will help you implement interactivity.

The tracks Erik Nuber recommended is a great way to learn, as you will follow a track, so you won't get lost!

If you could afford it, the Techdegrees here at Treehouse are amazing, and even though they might seem expensive, they are worth it.

Good luck Alexa!

Hi Alexa,

Wordpress development is a world of it's own; it's not rocket-science but it's definitely not for beginners who've never seen code before. You say your experience is making graphics for MySpace layouts ... that skill-set is almost entirely distinct from web design or web development — there is very little overlap. So you really wouldn't be bringing your skills "up-to-date" as you would be acquiring brand-new skills from scratch.

With that said, I would suggest completing the Web Design Track first. That track will introduce you to what exactly designing for the web entails. Once you're armed with that knowledge, you'll probably want to complete the Front-End Web Development Track. This track will introduce you to what coding/programming actually means. At that point, you'll be able to make an informed decision as to what direction you would like to proceed.

Good luck :)

Hi everyone and I just want to thank you all for replying with great comments as to where I should start. Now I don't feel as lost into where I am headed and I am going to start looking into that Tech Degree as well! :-)
