I think the most important thing said about the article element is just this: "The article sectioning element describes self-contained pieces of content".

So depending on what kind of web site the page is on, it could go around a story, or a recipe, or a photo and description of a pet available for adoption. Remember that it represents a complete "chunk" of content relative to what the page is about.
