I want to build a custom template for my portfolio, where should I start?

I thought about using squarespace, but I think building a template and website from scratch is a better option for me. Are there any tools or resources I can use to get started?

Hi Rachel:

Squarespace is a good option. You can also use something like WordPress, and start with a theme that does the job well enough to begin with. You can change the theme to make it more your own, or if you want to build a website from scratch, you can definitely check out Zac Gordon's Learning Adventures where they teach you how to build a theme from scratch.
