Assuming the rest of your code is correct, in console.printf() method your first argument should be "%s really %s this coding exercise." instead of "%s really %s".

needs to be the complete message:

String name = console.readLine("a name?");
String pastTenseVerb = console.readLine("enter a past tense verb:");
console.printf("%s really %s this coding exercise.", name, pastTenseVerb);
